Nîmes, une destination durable
With over 154,000 inhabitants and an area of 16,150 ha, Nîmes is the 18th largest city in France. The city of Antonin is also world-renowned for the majesty and exceptional preservation of its Roman monuments. Set against this backdrop of 2,000 years of history, the town, which has been awarded the "Ville d'Art et d'Histoire" (City of Art and History) label, boasts a beautiful old town center, an exceptional heritage site with numerous private mansions that bear witness to a rich past.
Nîmes boasts a rich and diverse plant heritage, ranging from historic gardens in the city center to neighborhood squares and numerous natural areas. The city' s ecological management of its green and natural spaces is fully in line with the principles of sustainable development.
Ranked the 5th greenest city in France by the Observatoire des Villes vertes, Nîmes boasts 372 hectares of carefully maintained public spaces and 1,080 hectares of natural areas, and has been awarded the Villes et Villages fleuris label with 4 flowers. Nîmes is also a WHO Health City and a Child-Friendly City.
Nîmes' heritage attracted many visitors early on, as evidenced by the numerous illustrations and guides published in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first tourist office was created in 1903, and the town has continued to strengthen its appeal ever since. Today, nearly 2 million visitors from all over the world come to Nîmes every year. This raises the question of how to develop sustainable tourism that respects the environment. To this end, the Tourist Office is making strong commitments within its own structure and operating model, raising awareness among its visitors and helping service providers to implement more virtuous actions for future generations.
