The Castellum, the terminus of the Nîmes aqueduct, is a rare vestige. To supply the city with water, a 50 km aqueduct was built in the middle of the 1st century AD, of which the Pont du Gard is a prestigious witness.

From this circular water distribution basin, cut into the rock (5.90m in diameter, 1.40m deep), lead pipes carried the water to public fountains and the city's various districts. This additional water supply contributed to Nîmes' prestige, comfort and Roman lifestyle.
