The Place aux Herbes has been "the heart" for centuries. Its mullioned windows, its arcades of stalls and its cathedral, which has been altered a hundred times, evoke the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Today, with its café terraces and passageways, it manages the feat of being both bustling and serene.

On the cathedral's façade, you can still see the square holes dug to enable medieval itinerant merchants to support their vegetable vices.

It was here that assemblies were held, processions formed and pagan festivals were celebrated. The square was also the scene of drama during the Wars of Religion.

Today, students from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Conservatoire de Musique, just a stone's throw away, meet Nîmes residents of all ages, who hurry to the nearby halles with their shopping bags.
