Romanesque Museum

The museum presents 25 centuries of history through 5,000 exceptional archaeological pieces, staged by 65 multimedia devices in an immersive museography (augmented reality, monumental audiovisual projections, etc.). Designed by Elizabeth de Portzamparc, the museum has been conceived around a demanding scientific and cultural project, with the aim of explaining the city's rich ancient heritage, and stimulating the desire to discover, understand and pass it on.
Enveloped in an undulating façade of translucent glass reminiscent of a mosaic, this 9,200m2 archaeological museum, which faces the Arènes, invites visitors on a unique journey through the history of Nîmes, from the 7th century BC to the Middle Ages.
As soon as you step inside, you'll be greeted by the spectacular remains of a fully restored propylaeum pediment, 15 metres above ground level, symbolizing the entrance to the sanctuary of the spring that gave birth to the city. It is the gateway to the museum, the archaeological garden, the restaurant and the green terrace, offering a unique 360° panoramic view of Nîmes and its finest Roman jewels.
